It’s always surprising when Jean-Luc Godard is accused of making “films without a script”. Quite the contrary, his scripts are extremely precise, as shown in this short film.
The images, very similar as the ones used in a storyboard, come from different scripts JLG made, like an artisan, during the preparation of the shooting of Film Socialisme.
For these collages JLG uses every type of images: photos of locations, actors, costume rehearsals, newspapers, drawings, advertising, books, etc., giving details for accessories that will be needed later (books, clothes, etc.) and also giving an idea of the framing and focus of each shot.
JLG uses very rustic material to make these: scissors, markers, pencils, photocopies…

On accuse souvent Jean-Luc Godard de tourner "des films sans scénario". Pourtant ses scénarios sont extrêmement précis, comme le montre ce court métrage.
Les images employées, similaires à celles d'un story board, proviennent des différents scénarios réalisés lors de la préparation de Film Socialisme.
Pour ces collages, JLG utilise toutes sortes d'images : des dessins, des photos (repérages, acteurs, essayages, accessoires),donnant ainsi de nombreux détails sur ce qui sera nécessaire sur le tournage. Des informations sur le cadrage et la focale sont aussi donnés.
JLG utilise des matériaux très simples pour réaliser ces cahiers : ciseaux, colle, feutres, photocopies...
De nombreux plans du film ont fini très ressemblants à ces collages de pré-production.
